The goal is to create a package which delivers a fully working application for which ever environment it is installed.
There are many ways of packaging up applications. Technology is evolving now where applications can be virtualised. This means that applications no longer have to be installed onto the target computer which reduces the risks of application conflicts and damaging the underlying operating system. Even at runtime applications can run in isolation to safe guard the environment reducing the number of application crashes and corrupt installations.
